Trust Me, this is really good! I made it with chocolate cupcakes plus a creamy peanut butter surprise inside. You can use it for frosting or filling.

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3 cup poweder sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream (must)

Cream butter & peanut butter, add powder sugar, mix until combined & scrape the bowl, mix on high speed for a minute, then add the extract, mix, add heavy cream and mix on high speed for 3 min. done :)

Is this thick/strong enough to make a border around a cake with a star tip? Thanks!

jdella85 Says... 23 Feb 2010 , 7:52am

I have used this recipe for many cakes. My husband and his friends love it! They say it tastes pretty close to a recipe that one of their grandmothers used.

stresseddesserts Says... 1 Mar 2010 , 11:13am

I never used it for a border yet, but it stays well for a 3 tiered stack cake for sure..

NikkiB912 Says... 12 Mar 2010 , 6:36am

I used this to fill my friend's devil's food cake for her birthday. She loved it and said it was a Reeses. I accidentally messed up because I halved the recipe but forgot to half the liquids...I just added more powdered sugar and PB. It was yum and I had some left over to decorate cupcakes!

stresseddesserts Says... 17 Mar 2010 , 6:27pm

This is a big hit recipe, Most requested

ammorris Says... 25 Mar 2010 , 8:29am

Can you tell me if this crusts?

brittisbakin Says... 27 Apr 2010 , 10:57am

This may be the best frosting I have ever made/tasted. Calling it "Dream" buttercream couldn't be more accurate. Thank you for the recipe!

Bridy Says... 1 May 2010 , 8:11pm

would you use sweetened peanut butter, or would this would with unsweetened PB?

Sumkat Says... 20 May 2010 , 7:45am

This was soooo good! Tastes just like the center of a receese! Does it have to be fridged because of the cream or will it be ok at room temp?

auntruthy Says... 13 Jun 2010 , 12:42pm

OMG! This was a big hit! I used it for my nephews graduation cake, I made a chocolate cake with this as the filling and buttercream frosting! Thank you!!

KayMc Says... 3 Jul 2010 , 6:21pm

This icing is incredibly deliscious! The texture and taste is perfect! I think it's even better than the recipe from Ina Garten.

Polkadot79 Says... 15 Jul 2010 , 3:03pm

It was awesome!

NJhomemade Says... 22 Jul 2010 , 7:19pm

Ricooooo, yummyyy, well I think this recipe sounds delicious, specially if combined with chocolate or marmelade....mmmmm, I will try it.

clpatrick Says... 22 Aug 2010 , 2:20pm

This was the best icing I have ever had. My family now requests this for all their cakes. I changed the heavy cream to skim milk and it was great.

nonilm Says... 23 Aug 2010 , 4:42pm

Just made this recipe and I think it's my new pb buttercream recipe! So creamy! A dream! Thank you!

lukenmedifsmom Says... 3 Sep 2010 , 5:34pm

I made this for the first time tonight and it is AWESOME!!!

gertie0223 Says... 12 Sep 2010 , 12:24am

I've tried a few other Peanut Butter Buttercream recipes, none of them nearly as good as this one. I think this might be the best frosting I've ever made. The texture is light and airy, a strong peanut butter flavor, sweet but not sicky....perfect yum-mo! I have a feeling after tomorrow, when the cupcakes will be eaten, I will be asked to make this again for sure. Also it piped onto my cupcakes beautifully!

awatterson Says... 7 Oct 2010 , 2:28pm

This is really yummy! It makes about 4 cups.

Sarah2418 Says... 21 Oct 2010 , 7:43pm

I just tried this recipe, it was so good.

MJTKNT Says... 21 Oct 2010 , 11:48pm

This is SOOOOO good! I had to keep myself from licking the bowl. It's light tasting, creamy, and thick. Definitely going into my favorites!

lct_thompson Says... 26 Oct 2010 , 9:17am

what is heavy cream. I live in Canada and have looked for it and cant find it.

mmmcake0072 Says... 19 Nov 2010 , 11:00am

could you please let me know if the cake has to be refridgerated because of the cream? Also in Canada i believe that it is heavy cream. If you are in Ontario, it is the one in the purpleish carton. Going off memory i think its 18%.

neelycharmed Says... 21 Nov 2010 , 2:55pm

heavy cream is usually the same thing as whipping cream

jenn1116 Says... 6 Jan 2011 , 7:45pm

This recipe sounds great, I can't wait to try it. Does it hold up well under fondant?

princessmargie Says... 29 Jan 2011 , 10:10am

All I can say is....WOW! This is my new fav by far :) It's not too sweet and so smooth. OMG...I love it! Thank you so much for this recipe. I will be using it all the time now. Wow wee! YAY!

This icing is fabulous! I made this for some cupcakes and my family is still raving about it! Thank you for posting it! If you have a white buttercream icing recipe that is as good as this one I'd love to have it!

This frosting is so freakin good! I frosted about 18 cupcakes, and doesnt seem to crust- which I like for cupcakes, oh and it's super easy to make :D

Brianna2689 Says... 7 Apr 2011 , 9:20am

soooooo amazinggg!(:

m_willford Says... 22 Apr 2011 , 11:46am

Made this last night as a filling for a dark chocolate cake. Sprinkled some chopped reese's peanut butter cups on top of the filling and frosted the whole thing in chocolate buttercream, then covered in modeling chocolate. It was the perfect filling... stiff enough to take the weight, but still light, fluffy and smooth! Great peanut butter taste, wasn't too sweet to catch the back of my throat like some fillings/frosting. This is my go-to peanut butter filling!

Renidea Says... 29 May 2011 , 2:11am

Delicious! Went beautifully with the chocolate cupcakes I made. Held the bakery swirl well on top of the cupcakes, but I don't know how long it will last since they were all gone in under a day :)

MekaPolu Says... 11 Jun 2011 , 5:00pm

I filled A+ Babana Cake with this and it was a hit - yum! I also piped dots with it, which worked out fine, but I wouldn't try to pipe anything more complicated.

JenJen28 Says... 29 Jun 2011 , 2:00pm

This filing is absolutely delicious

Havanajax Says... 29 Jun 2011 , 9:07pm

Love this filling.. tastes delicious

Kathy1125 Says... 6 Jul 2011 , 6:32am

I will be making cupcakes for a child's birthday party in July. If I use this for the filling and the frosting will the peanut butter flavor be too strong? Does this have to be refridgerated?

jewordsoflife Says... 19 Jul 2011 , 4:09pm

Whenever I'm testing a new recipe for the first time I always half it when possible in case I don't like it. This is one time I wish I had made a full batch! This stuff is "DREAMY"!! SOOO good, a must try!! Thanks for sharing!!

tjames30 Says... 27 Jul 2011 , 10:50am

Has anyone used this under fondant? I made it and it was delicious!!! So yummy, but would like to try it under some fondant.

tjames30 Says... 28 Jul 2011 , 2:37pm

Anyone tried adding meringue powder to this recipe or using with fondant?

triquetra33 Says... 31 Jul 2011 , 3:40pm

Made this last night- tastes so good! I'm normally not a peanut butter fan, but it was hard to stop sampling :). Only problem I had was that it was THICK...did not spread easily even though I didn't add quite the entire amount of sugar and added a bit more instead of icing the cake I just used it as filling...YUM!

LindaFrosting Says... 27 Aug 2011 , 4:11am

I am speechless and can't even come close to trying to describe this frosting in a way that does it justice! I used my Kitchenaid with the paddle, and it made the creamiest, smoothest PB frosting I've EVER tasted. My husband loves PB frosting, and he said it was the best he'd ever tasted. My Mother-in-Law offered me her recipe - but instead I went to and used this one based on the reviews. She wanted MY recipe when she tasted this! :D Seriously, this is 'it' for me for PB frosting from now on!

Stephanie102294 Says... 1 Sep 2011 , 7:47pm

Just made this again and put it on a 3 Layer Brownie cake then covered in mmf! Oh wow talk about the family fav!! Thanks for sharing this!!

bake-aholic Says... 7 Sep 2011 , 5:22pm

I second the question from a previous person-has anyone tried adding meringue powder to this for a crusting icing?

Sugarlips52 Says... 14 Sep 2011 , 8:17pm

I just made this today for a chocolate cake with peanut butter filling and omg, it was sinfully delish!

proV Says... 26 Sep 2011 , 6:40am

Hi stressed desserts, this is amazing. I love it. Can you tell me what your creamy peanut butter surprise inside the cupcake is please? That is exactly what I want to do for the chocolate cupcakes I am making for my son's football team and can't seem to find a peanut butter filling recipe. Thank you!!!

LeeBD Says... 2 Feb 2012 , 7:27am

Made this for the first time last week. I had a request for chocolate cake w/ pnut butter filling. It was a huge hit! Thanks : )

I don't usually like ABC but this is absolutely delicious.

kris1607 Says... 3 Aug 2012 , 6:39am

Do you use salted or unsalted butter in this recipe??

KLCCrafts Says... 7 Aug 2012 , 12:06pm

kris1607, since it doesn't specify, assume salted butter. That's what I used and this stuff is fantastic! So creamy, so peanut buttery, so yummy!

Thegalnextdoor Says... 21 Sep 2012 , 1:45pm

Question, what time of peanut butter is everyone using? Jiff? Skippy? Peter Pan? Adam's? I only have Adam's, thanks Costco, but if the other brands are what everyone else is using, I'd rather use that if that's what will get me the same tasty results. Can anyone tell me?

Thegalnextdoor Says... 21 Sep 2012 , 1:46pm

Rats, I meant to say what type, not time.. oopsy. (:

KSCakeCreations Says... 7 Oct 2012 , 4:26pm

Can this icing be tinted like regular buttercream? I have an order for a football cake with PB icing. I haven't made the icing yet, but with all of the great reviews, I am going to make a batch and try it out. What are your thoughts on pairing it with chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache filling? Would the flavors complement each other or would they be too strong for one another?
