I tried out Collette Peter's merang buttercream recipe with this cake. Boy, is it ever tasty but a little challenging to work with.

Thanks everyone! The topper is fondant with a little Tylose mixed in. I just rolled it out and shaped it and stuck 2 toothpicks in the bottom of each number. I laid it on a "bed" of cornstarch so the back wouldn't get too flat while drying and put a tiny bit of tin foil under the toothpicks so they would dry staight and not droop down. When they were dry I painted them gold, and stuck them on the cake with a little royal icing glue just in case the toothpicks weren't strong enough to hold it.
