this is a 2 tier cake. the hat is 6" round, 2 layers of orange and vanilla cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting, covered with white fondant that was painted black with food color gel. accented with fondant hatband and holly leaves. the snowman face was 3 layers of orange and vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting. face, nose and scarf made out of fondant.

actually, i didnt want to waste a lot of gel and having to knead it into the fondant, so i covered the top tier with white fondant, then painted it with black gel mixed with a little bit of clear vanilla. i used far less gel, and it took much less effort. also, gave a shiny finish to look like a top hat. no, it wasnt colored piping gel, it was gel food coloring..
