I used the back end of a ballpoint pen...a guest at the wedding thought I was going to say I used something more romantic than that...not sure what she had in mind. The end of the pen worked great...they recommended a rounded dowel rod...didn't have one...so I improvised!
yes, it is only one layer. I actually carved out some of the center and rested it inside of that...with the "grass" around it's base, it was pretty stable.
