Mel's Graduation Cake

Mel's Graduation Cake on Cake Central

I made this cake for a co-worker who graduated from UConn this year. The top blue cake is chocolate cake with BC, the top two books are gold and marble cake with BC and covered in fondant. The third book is part of the stand I made. She loves chocolate coved strawberries so I incorporated that into the theme by putting chocolate squares on top of dipped berries and using a squiggle of yellow BC for a tassel. The berries sit on round chocolate disc with UConn colors (blue and white).

The number are fondant. I added Fixodent to the fondant to speed up the drying process. I found a font that I liked on my computer and I enlarged the numbers to the height I wanted. printed out the "2007" and then cut the numbers out. layed the numbers on the rolled out fondant and with an exacto knife cut/traced out the number. I made a U shaped base from the fondant also. let everthing dry a day and then I used white chocolate to secure the numbers to the U shaped base. 9 hours for everything.

What an awesome way to incorporate the strawberries! Wow your "pages" in your books are so realistic! Fabulous job all around!

Fantastic Job! I can't believe you have another job besides decorating cakes!! I love the girl sitting on the cake and your numbers on top are so crisp and clean. How did you get them so nice, and also to stand up? (and how long did this whole thing take you???;) )

Thank you for the wondeful comments they are much appreciated. Yes there are separaters and dowels between the layers. BTW the chocolates square were just made from candy melts in a sheet pan. When the choc hardened I scored with a knife and ruler then and snapped it on the score line. The the strawberries were a big hit especially with those who don't like cake. :D
