Leaning Tower Of Cake

Leaning Tower Of Cake on Cake Central

This one was a challenge from start to finish, nothing went my way including dropping the bottom tier. I learned two big lessons no matter how frustrated and late it is (1) ALWAYS level your cake and (2) make sure your dowels are the correct length. Considering the day I had making it I was happy with the end result except for the leaning part and the bride was happy so that is what really mattered most to me.

Still nice even with the lean. My husband put a small leveler in my stocking for Xmas to help me in leveling as I stack. Really helped!

beautiful cake.. regarding the platform . can you tell me what is a "dummy" and drum? Can you use any type of fabric or does it have to be the slippery shiny stuff?

A dummy is a fake cake made from styrofoam. People use them to make fake cakes for display or to make small wedding cakes look bigger. A drum is made of cardboard that is about an inch thick covered with foil, used as a base for wedding cakes. This one was covered in gold foil, but the color didn't match so I covered it in fabric. Most supply websites have these products. You could use any fabric, whatever matches. I used satin here.

I used a 16" dummy and drum. I cut strips of fabric 10" wide and sewed them together end for end, it took about 225" of fabric. Then I pinned the fabric using flat head pins around the top and bottom of the dummy making ruffles as I went. Then I covered the drum with fabric by taping it to the underside, then I nailed the drum to the dummy using a big nail. I then covered the top of the drum with contact paper. It was super easy and I can change the fabric, or take it off and wash it for next time.
