One of my favourite images when I think of the Chinese New Year is of lanterns lighting the sky. I immediately had this image in my head when I read the challenge. Being an airbrush novice, I decided to challenge myself, and here is the result.

The lantern itself is 100% edible, made of wafer paper and spaghetti. Underneath sits a 4" x 7" tall cake upon which the lantern rests. The whole configuration is elevated on a pedestal to look like it's floating, and contains a flickering battery powered candle light.

The background is fondant over foam board, airbrushed to look like the early night sky over the palace. Each floating lantern has been airbrush with gold to make it appear like it's glowing. All up, the background measures 30" x 25.5." By far the largest thing I've ever made.

I will take more pictures in daylight, but didn't want the light to obscure the glow from the candle light and the background lanterns.
