Thank you very much for your comments. tripletmom, you can get the top smooth if you beat the whip cream just until it forms soft peaks, not more!!!, in fact, the whipp must be a little soft (for the decorations you have to beat the whipp a little more), also use a big spatula to spread the frosting and at the end dip it (the spatula) in hot water to warm it up a little so you can achieve this smoothness. It really works!!!
