Fishing/beach Cake

Fishing/beach Cake on Cake Central

I did this cake for my husbands 30th birthday. His two favorite hobbies are fishing and surfing, so I tried to incorporate both. I used 2 11 x 15 cakes to make the cake, and then added a half of another 11 x 15 to make the cake a little longer. I used wiltons buttercream recipe. Once I iced it, I let it cool in the fridge to make it easier to work with, since it was a lot of cake. I tinted the icing blue, and then iced half the cake to make it look like water, and for the other half of the cake I used crushed graham crackers to make it look like sand. I then used a boat mold and fondant to make the fishing boat, and then painted it with food coloring and vodka. I made fishing poles out of bamboo skewers, and painted them brown. I attached string to one side, and attached the other side of the string to a toothpick and out it in the cake. I added a small fondant bobber on top to cover the toothpick. I then used chocolate molds to make the sanddollars, surfboards, fish, and the shrimp, then painted them with food coloring and vodke. I made the palm trees out of gumpaste, and used a leaf cutout. I put each leaf cutout on top of a skewer to make the center look 3D, and then I cut the leaf to make it look like a palm tree leaf. I attached the five leaves together and let them dry overnight. Once dry I put them ontop of a pretzel rod for the tre trunk. Then I made coconuts out of fondant. The graham crackers were messy, but the overall effect looked like sand, my husband loved it. It was the talk of the party.
