My NIeces Wedding Cake From 1972

An oldie, but a photo I just found tonight. A cake I made for my nieces wedding in 1972. The base is styrofoam with just the two top tiers actual cake, and we had sheet cakes in the kitchen for extra servings. Royal icing Lambeth designs on the bevel bases, South African royal icing lace wings from the sides to the top of the tiers. Very outdated but kind of fun to see how fashions have changed over the years.

Very pretty and you're right, very 1972! But, I really like all the Lambeth -- it's classic cake! Well done.

That is amazingly beautiful, breathtaking, fabulous. The platforms the cakes are on.. is that cake angled out and decorated? Is it all BC? Pic is from 1972? You made it?

I, for one, love this style of cake....a true classic.

I did make it. The bottom base cake is actually styrofoam, decorated in royal icing Cornelli, my hand was very tired.

It was all that hand piped Cornelli work on the base that was really time consuming. Plus, I was 8 months pregnant at the time I did this cake.

OMG Shirley! You were incredible back that far? You are awesome! That is amazing! Wish you taught around L.A.!

I have a book someplace here that shows how they stuffed the stryro bases with pieces of wrapped fruitcake to give to the guests! the work on the outside was time consuming and beautiful like your cake. I like their idea, can work on a cake forever and just stuff it at the last minute. I wish I knew where that book was today..lol

Oh thanks Pat, maybe you could come up here sometime.

ShirleyW Says... 8 years ago

That's interesting. This base was solid styrofoam, no cake inside.
