Excavator Cake

I made this cake for my son's 4th birthday. His cake is an excavator and was my first time using fondant. I was really pleased with the result and LOVED working with fondant. Everything on the cake is edible, except for the thread I used to string together the licorice for the tread. The arm is homemade biscotti glued together with royal icing. For the digger claw, I carved cake, stuck in little pieces of licorice cut on an angle and covered the whole thing in fondant. The dirt on the sheet cake is a mixture of Nilla Wafers, graham crackers and Oreos, which is a surprisingly tasty and realistic combination. Looked like Arizona dirt. There are a few candy rocks thrown in too. The little pile of dirt is carved cake. Letters are in fondant, which I cut in freehand. The candles, which you can't see in this picture, are little caution cones. It was fun to make, although pretty time consuming. My son loved it!
