Stars N Stripes

Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Icing covered in MM Fondant. This cake has been a holy terror for me today. I am a newbie and I know this is ugly so be kind to me. +) I made this cake from scratch it's a sour cream pound cake recipe turned red velvet. I started to make the cc icing (from scratch) yesterday and saw a can of DH in the pantry, oooh save time. Iced the cake, thought the smell was a little off, but thougt it was just me and my allergies. This morning I was smoothing it out with some more and washed out the container.Saw on the bottom of can "Rec use by date 10-2009!!" OH POOH, I scrap off the icing (cause I'm not throwing away this pound cake) and then wipe off with a paper towel. Make my cc frosting, YUM YUM. Life is good, get out my fondant I made yesterday (first time ever, cause I'm trying to same $$). OH YES it rolls out PERFECT!!!! life is tooling along until, I color me some royal blue fondant I have to get hubby to help me knead it cause my hands hurt so bad. WELL! I get it on the top layer it's not too bad, I figure I can cover the crack with a star, I trim it. FIDDLE STICKS I trim it too short!!!!!!! Can't cover that up. YEAH YEAH you are asking how did you trim it too short. Well, I don't know, I'm having a bad morning...... So I take the fondant off the layer and chuck it in the sink, this layer has already had a bad time cause I tried to level it, by eyeing it. WELL I'm cockeyed!!! get out the leveler now it's a REALLY short layer. Icing is a mess, it's dried and lumpy!! GRRRR I get out my satin ice and color it light blue cause I'm not ruining this $$$ fondant. And here's my mess of a Memorial Day Cake. This is one that I will not forget soon. I'm a newbie mess is progress!
