yes, I mark the squares off first with my spatula (only problem: As I worked my way around the cake, the pattern didn't match up when I got back to the starting point! solution: I applied roses in the corners to hide my mistake!) This effect could also be easily recreated by using fondant squares instead of piping the icing onto the squares, and would be much less work!
