Here is another graduation cake. This was done on a 9" cake so I had to fit everything on it rather tightly. Everything is fondant.

How did you make your cap? It's awesome.
The cap is actually a cake baked in a 5" pan. I cut the heigth off and covered it
... it in fondant. The board piece was a piece of fondant I let dry and then place a thin piece of cardboard under it for extra support. the cardboard was cut 1/2" smaller on each side so that it wouldn't show. Hope this helps. and it really was simple to do.
