Love your cake! What is SM Buttercream? I'm new to this site and I'm having a little trouble with the abbreviations. Is there a list somewhere?

Thanks everyone for the compliments! I'll try to answer as many questions as I can (1) "SM" is swiss meringue buttercream. (2) I wish there was an easy way to tell you how to get the icing smooth. Truthfully, it takes me a long time (at least an hour just to frost the cake!). I just keep playing around until I get it right. Start with a crumb coat and use a six inch spackle from the hardware store to apply the buttercream. Be sure to wipe the spackle in warm water and dry it off between applicat...

(3) To prop up the lid on the treasure chest, I hid bamboo skewers (cut to the appropriate length) in the pot of gold and inside the silver sword on each end of the treasure chest. This way no one could see the supports. (The cake that forms the lid is placed on cardboard and is completely covered in fondant.

Thank you for posting this - it inspired me to make my own pirate figures. They didn't turn out as well as yours, but yours is so exquisite! I need to practice more! I made these for my son's pirate ship cake and it was a hit! Thank you so much!
