Carnation Display For Wilton Gum Paste Class

Carnation Display For Wilton Gum Paste Class on Cake Central

I am preparing to teach a Gum Paste class that Wilton used to offer. One of the projects in that class is to make a carnation display. This is the sample I made. Really delicate leaves!

Yes I did use the Wilton cutters. I do one additional step to help get the "distressed" look to the edge of the petals. I use an exacto- blade to put tiny slices in the edge of the circles. 1st I put 8 slits in the edges, evenly spaced, then make 2 shorter cuts between each of those 8 cuts. After that I use the ball tool to "thin" the edges. All those little pieces of gp will ruffle up.

You can probably make these with fondant + gum tex as well. A little hint. I found just ruffling the edges didn't give me the look I wanted so I put 12 little cuts around the edge. Then I used the ball tool to "thin" the cut edges. That gave the edges a bit more "distressed" look. Also the green leaves are juniper green with a touch of red! That gives it a bit more natural color. Then use non-toxic magenta pastel and brush the leaves and stems.
