This was a birthday cake for my Mother who "Brakes for Turtles." The body is a cake baked in a pyrex bowl. The legs are made from egg shaped cakes cut in half. It is decorated with buttercream. The head and tail are fondant.
Aha! The source of controversy...Well, I went to an art store and had a silk screen done, which is basically a "cloth" stencil, the same kind that is used to print logos on T-Shirts...Thanks so much for sharing your tips ;-) I just realized what it was when I looked at the picture again today...
Thanks all! The shell is piped on using a star tip and a spatula-striped bag (black, green, brown). When it set, I gently flattened it with a Viva p.t. The head I scored with a knife and then painted with green and black (watered down) until it looked "real." Funny thing...this cake was a red velvet--too real for my tastes but that's what Mom wanted. Okay Godiva, now you have to share how you did the lettering on your Bible cake  .
I love this. I would love to use your idea for a 8 year olds bday if you don't mind. If you can email me any info to help such as size bowl, how the legs are placed. how you supported the head etc. I would be forever grateful. Thanks Debbie [email protected]
Hmmm, I thought we were't supposed to post pictures that weren't cake. I mean, it's obvious that this is a REAL turtle! Honestly, you'd have fooled most people with this one. It's amazing!
that is THEE cutest turtle and funniest story to go along with it! i love the bc ridges on its shell and that wrinkled old head of his- fabulous job!!! i am putting this in my favorites- never had a reason to make a turtle cake before, but you just NEVER KNOW!!! :)
