Maggie's 1St Birthday

Maggie's 1St Birthday on Cake Central

I made this cake for my daughter's first birthday a few days ago. The cake matched the character on her birthday invitations. I thought the cake turned out pretty cute considering the struggle I seem to have with getting the buttercream icing smooth. My son's birthday party is in a few weeks - he want's a Buzz Lightyear cake. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks for looking.

Like I said, you did a terrific job - the icing - especially on the face - looks very smooth, but I understand about wanting to get it smoother - one of my constant practices, because I have trouble in the area as well.

You did a terrific job!!! Did you use the Wilton Party Hat pan? And then added a round cake pan underneath?

Yes I used the Wilton Party Hat pan and I used an 8" round pan (the directions I received called for a 9" pan - but I didn't have one). I just trimmed approximately 3 inches off of the round pan. I used the Viva Paper towel trick on the icing to help smooth it, but I would love to be able to smooth the icing with the angled spatula and not have to use the paper towel.
