Topsy Turvy Birthday Cake

Topsy Turvy Birthday Cake on Cake Central

My first attempt at a Topsy Turvy cake, and only the second time covering a cake with Fondant. I need to work on it more. I'm finding the key is to get a REALLY smooth crumb coat. . I bow down to those of you that do it well. Anyone have any tips? I needed another reason to practice, and people to eat cake, so I made my own Birthday Cake! It would be pretty silly for me to go buy one, right? Thanks for looking!

Neat cake. I love brown! It sets the colors off so nicely. These are so hard. I agree with everyone about smoothing the buttercream and a fondant smoother is a must!

This is a beautiful cake. I'm getting ready to try my first topsy turvy and hope it goes half as well! I love the colors!

Very pretty design and I like the color combo. You are brave to attempt first topsy turvy with fondant in my opinion and you did a great job!

I think you did a wonderful job. The colors work well together. I usually smooth my cakes with a thin layer of icing the same way I normally do if not using fondant and then cover with the fondant. Your colors are absolutely gorgeous.

Good job! I learned you need to start at the top and smooth the sides down not side to side. If you smooth downward it helps to remove any air bubbles and makes it smooth out nicer. Also roll the fondant to about 1/4 inch thick. But I think this came out really nice.
