Treasure Chest/map

Treasure Chest/map on Cake Central

This was for my son's 10th bday. Treasure chest was made out of a loaf pan. Map was made out of fondant and I used edible markers to free-hand the lettering. Toy coins/jewels. GramCraker crumbs for the sand.

Wow, wow, wow! That is awsome. The map is awsome and the chest looks great! Nice job. I'm gonna save this to my folders.

I used food color gels mixed with water to dilute them some to color the map. I started with a golden color and applied it with a paper towel and then just layer the colors - brown, black, etc. to get the effect I wanted. It was so easy. Then I used a food color marker and hand drew the compass and dotted lines and the happy bday message. It turned out better then I expected and this was one of my favorite cakes so far!

This is such a wonderful cake! It would be perfect for a Pirates of the Caribbean party which is so popular right now! May have to give this one a try! Great job!

Thanks Cambo - that's kind of the reason my son asked me to do this cake - we went on a Disney Cruise 2 weeks before his bday and one of the theme nights was Pirates of the Caribbean so of course I just had to make one for him!! He is still talking about it 3 weeks later! It's nice to know how much someone appriciates your work, especially your kids!

This is terrific! Can I ask did you support the top lid of the chest with anything? I am scared if I do a cake lid that it will slide or fall!?

WELL- it DID slide off the back! LOL so I learned real quick that I had to dowel the back edge through to the bottom then I used the coins to prop the "lid" open. I know a few other people on here have done treasure chests and had no problem with sliding but boy did I - but nothing a few dowels and carful camoflage couldn't hide!! lol - all my cakes truely are a learning experience! I think maybe next time I would put the top "lid" on its own cake board before I tried to prop it open. But it turned ...
