Modelling paste is made from sugarpaste and CMC gum powder combined. 1 teaspoon of CMC to 500g of sugarpaste. Sprinkle powder onto work surface and knead the paste into it until the powder disappears. Cover in clingfilm and store in a self sealing plastic bag. Colour and use as required. (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose - CMC) from Squires Kitchen online.
The side design is made using embossers from patchwork cutters. I think it's called a cradle set but I'd need to check on that. The effect is good though. Each square is cut out separately and attached onto the cake. I printed a picture of Eeyore from google images and used it as a guide for likeness. I think he's one of my favourites. The balloons are made from modelling paste attached to florist wires.
oh my god! i just check your website! i am soooo amazed by how great your cakes are! can you share with us how u make your figures?do u use a mold or did it by hand?
I don't use any moulds. I use the internet to find images of characters and work from that. I use sugarpaste (fondant) mixed with CMC powder to make a modelling paste. It allows the characters to harden but remain soft enough to bite into if you wanted to.
wow! i also checked out ur site and i'm floored! i can't find a single flaw any where!! i can't even wrap my mind around how u make and attach such detail to ur characters!
I just bought the book that this cake is in....You did a great job! This is one of my favorites in the book. Did you find the embossers at Hobby Lobby???
With regard to Confectionary2's comment on buying the book that "this" cake was in....can I just point out that only a similar side design can be found in Lindy Smith's Celebrate with a Cake book. The top for this cake is not shown in any book and was created by me. Thought I should clear that up before anyone scoured the net looking for the instructions!
Oh! so cute. He is my favorite character. Love him. How did you do it? Any special instructions? I bet there are. Did a great job.I think this cake is in the best top three I ever seen.
Eeyore16....I have to say that for most of my modelling when it comes to well known characters, I look at an image from google or I sit with a soft toy in front of me and try and recreate it in sugar. I do not own the rights to these kind of characters so I could not offer modelling instructions for them. Practice and more practice and you will get a result!
