Dora Topsy Turvy Front
This is my first topsy turvy cake! It is also my first paid cake from someone who I don't know - an actual referral. I was very nervous - but I love it! It was so much fun to do. It is a chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and mmf. The starts and butterflys are painted with pearl dust. Any advice on how to improve the next one would be welcome.
Fantastic job!! ;-D The details are so perfect! This must have taken you FOREVER!!!
improve...you must be joking..This is PERFECT!!!
Wow! nice job. I love how you did the stars in different spots. It was very DORA. It's a good thing Swiper didn't get your stars!! haha
You did a great job, I think it is so cute!!! My daughter is wanting Dora dec's for her birthday party, I dont think I will be able to measure up to your cake!!! Wonderful job!!!
Advice on how to improve...right. No improvement necessary. You're so talented!
Improve? Sha! It's beautiful!
Totally cute I love it. I love the texture on the orange layer - I saw that rolling pin and I want to get it now! It that layer cake or fake - I have to do one of these soon so any pointers on construction would be appreciated!! Great work!
If you "improved" anymore you'd be in the hall of fame!!!! This is awesome!! GREAT colors and placement of everything and I LOVE how you did the butterflies!!! You've got great creativity!! Look out! I think I saw swiper!!!lol. Love it!
Where did you get your Dora? Did you make her, or is she a figurine?
Gosh guys! Your making me blush. I saw that rolling pin this week and I "had to get it!" The orange layer is fake - the rest is cake. I found that with the textured rolling pin you have to push pretty hard - and I'm not so coordinated with it yet so I decided to use it on the fake layer. I got a ton of ideas from "Cakes to Dream On" by Colette Peters - got it for mothers day. I have a butterfly cookie cutter and I used my shaping foam and ball tool to shape it.
This is an incredible cake. Every detail is perfectly executed. Congratulations. I am sure you're going to get more referrals from this cake.
Thanks again. As for your construction question cakecre8tor - I tried Colette Peters system and cut foamcore boards down - instead of using cardboard circles. It was a bit more expensive - but the boards worked great. Very sturdy, did not get "soggy" for lack of a better word. If you are looking for more specific details - I'd be happy to share - just pm me. Overall- this cake was a lot easier to do than I thought it would be. I made a diagram and really mapped it out - colors and sizes - that...
Yes I did, I did a crumb coat first.
okay, first of all this cake is TOTALLY awesome.....second of all....I was wondering the same thing about Dora did you mold her, is it a toy and I'm kinda freakin out cuz I see her pants have that spiral pattern like the middle tier......did you mold her??????????
Dora's a toy - got it at walmart for $5. I made her a cute little mmf skirt and used my new textured rolling pin on it - I love that rolling pin, got it from Michaels for $9.99 - it's made by wilton. I gave her a skirt because I taped two dowl rods to her legs to stick into the cake. I bought another doll that I am planning on making a gumpaste mold out of so I can try making her completely from mmf next time. Thought I stated that before, but now see that it didn't fit in my message - (sorry kima...
OH, WOW, SLK! This is AWESOME!!! You've really outdone yourself, girl! Thanks for the inspiration :)
This cake is perfect and your colors are so vibrant. I'm sure you'll get plenty of business after this one!!!!
Very, very cool! I love the pearl touches. The whole thing just really *pops* with color!
Girl, you make phenomenal cakes. I'm in awe.
Great Looking cake! Did you use buttercream under the mmf?
It doesn't need improvement, it's awesome! My 4 year old loves this cake, I'm not that good yet to even try an attempt though lol!
Awesome cake and great colors. I especially love the butterflies!
Thanks so much. When I was planning it and picked out the colors my husband said "do you really think those colors are going to work together?" So, needless to say I was a little nervous. But when it all came together, I was very happy. I have a feeling this will become a popular one for me - now I just need to figure out what to chareg for this when I do another one.
Absolutely gorgeous!!!! Your customer must have just adored this cake. You are soooooooo talented!!!!!
very nice job
I am freeking blown away by this cake!! First topsy turvy, first paid cake? Advice on improvements?? You gotta be kidding! My grandaughter would love this cake. I'm not that good.
