Painted Rose

Painted Rose on Cake Central

I saw some cakes with the designs/details "painted" onto the icing. Been itching to try out the technique & finally had the time this week. Needs work on the rose in the centre (I didn't get an A in art class..as you can probably tell...LOL), but I think this is my best work so far.

Please feel free to give tips on how I can improve on this technique...I like it a lot.

Thanks for looking.

I think your painting ability is great! You would have gotten an A in my art class!! Did you let your cake set a bit after icing it before painting the roses? I painted a whole scene on a 20"x20" sheet cake on BC after letting it sit after icing it to "dry a bit". (You can see it here under "other" cakes called Monet-The Dance.) GREAT JOB on you cake!

Very very pretty!!! I can't give any tips on the technique, I've never done it, but it looks wonderful, I'd like to try it!

I usually outline with buttercream, then pull it in with a brush. It takes a lot of time but is very fun, just like painting with paints! It IS easier if I let the base coat set, but I can also get a transparent look if I paint when the base coat still isn't set & mix it with the color I'm paining on top. I did this with the wings on my fairy cake - the pict doesn't show it too good, but you might get the idea. I also use color gels, like the black stripes on my bees on the Whimsical Bugs cake. Good job!

thanks all. i was inspired by your cake ellyrae, tho i've got miles to go before i can make mine as pretty as yours :-). i know i should have let the icing dry, but i was impatient. that's why it's a bit smudgy in places. the technique i used was to paint using nylon brushes (i'm a bit particular about using paintbrushes made from bristles) & food coloring. the design was drawn freehand, so, the roses aren't regular in size/look. hope i've answered your question, standingforjesus.
