1St Practice Wedding Tier Cake

1St Practice Wedding Tier Cake on Cake Central

This was the first real cake Sue and I tried to practice for wedding cakes. It should be in the disaster file. We must have put the dowels in wrong and the whole thing kept sinking and and finally cracked and the bottom tier just self destructed! Any advice on the dowel placement and height? You can see the crack on the far right and the ruffel came away on the left. YIKES! Glad it was only practice!!!!!! Help!!!!

the cake looks good, i would suggest that maybe your dowels weren't long enough, and the crack happend, when the top cake sunk into the bottom one until it found some support. 8-9 dowels on each tier should be more than enough.

We used cardbord under each layer and 8-9 dowels randomly placed under each tier - just like the book said. Also put one large dowel through the whole thing - boards and all.

Wilton has excellent instructions in their books. Also, do a search on this site for tiered cake construction ( or something like that)...there's an article which is good. I place my dowels in a circle under the next tier....very close to the size of it's plate or cardboard circle....

Make sure that you use the number of dowels that match the size of the cake to go on top of it. For instance, if you have a 14" and are putting a 10' on top, you need 10 dowels that are the heighth of your tier and place them in a circle evenly around the cake about 2 inches from the center out.
