Russian Style Painted Cake

This cake was decorated with royal icing and hand-painted in one stroke technique, which was very popular in Russia in the 18th century – Nizhny Tagil technique of painting. This technique was used for decorating jewellery boxes, trays, etc. Nizhny Tagil technique is characterized by rich colours and the most common theme is floral ornaments. After taking a few masterclasses to learn this traditional technique of painting, I wanted to recreate it on a cake and this is the finished result.
