Chocolate Roses

I had a ball with this one! I have been waiting for an excuse to play around with chocolate clay. I made about 70 roses with semi-sweet, milk, and white chocolate as well as 50 leaves with the milk and semi-sweet clays. (Next time I will either lighten the milk chocolate or darken the semi-sweet as they came out to be the same color....) Dark chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Inspired by the book Chocolate Cakes for Weddings and Celebrations by John Slattery.

Great job! I have tried and tried to make these but have not had any luck. The clay gets too soft and they all just smoosh together!

These were actually my first go at chocolate clay.... I have wanted to try it for a while and with this cake the people said "Do whatever you want!" So I had an excuse to play around.... Hooray!

nicole - I used chocolate clay. You melt 10 oz. of chocolate (whatever flavor) and then add 1/3 cup light corn syrup. There are instructions here on the site if you go to "recipes" and search for chocolate clay.....

Your cake and roses are beautiful!!! Great Job!!! May I ask. . .how did you do the swirling frosting - I love the look and would like to try it.

Thre is a recipe for the chocolate clay on this site - Princess, the chocolate actually rolls out like fondant and you mold the roses in the same way. The frosting was tricky for me - I spend all this time trying for smooth frosting, but I wanted a rough look on this cake so I just put the icing on and swirled my knife through it making the rough design.

BEAUTIFUL! sometimes we get so busy trying to perfect smooth icing, we think swirly icing doesnt look professional. but you've complimented the skill of making chocolate roses with the tempting mouthwatering homemade look of the icing. a great pair. good way to make a presentation!
