i am just starting to make cakes, so to speak, can you tell me the steps in making a barbie doll cake? my daughter is turning threee and would absolutely love this. like how do you get the fondant to stick to the barbie doll? and are there just stacked rounds under the dress that are carved into the shape of a dress? how do you keep the fondant from drying out so fast when you are working with it? i need to learn some tricks of the trade!! thanks to anyone willing to give me some advice.

Well not sure If I am the one to be asking, I am teaching my self to do cakes I am more artist than baker but, I can tell you how I did it.
8/31/11 at 11:23am
In answer to question of how: First I am teaching my self to do cakes so I am sure a professional would tell you correctly how. but this is how I did it. I had the dome doll cake pan, it did not give me the hiegth I wanted so I stacked it on an 8 inch round. Then carved a little to the cakes in a whole to give it more shape that I wanted ( helps if cakes are forzen when carving) then wrapped the parts of the doll that will be inserted into the cake. and ponytailed and wrapped hair in plastic wrapp..

2 part You always try to work fast with fondant. I added skirt in section to get the drape and thedifferent tone to front of cake. Fondant will almost stilck to doll any way but a little warter works like a great glue. The bodice I used the doll's real dress to make a paper patterrn so all the pieces would fit well together . After that is all detail . hint : I covered the cake with fondant before I placed doll in. hope this helps ya.

This is wonderful! How did you get the stripes to look so blended on the shoulder puffs and what tip did you use for the white lace trim??
9/24/11 at 8:32am
for the blended fondant... takes time but I made my strips then placed them on top of another rolled out fondant the starting lightly roll the rolling pin over them, increasing in pressure till blended. Hope that helps !
9/24/11 at 8:33am
for the little lace...I used the 101s tip .
