Grand Piano

Grand Piano on Cake Central

Cake is pound cake. Since the cake was very heavy, it has a plywood base support directly under the center along with wooden pegs. I covered the support with the same foil as the bottom board to make it less noticible. I baked 9 sheet cakes and stacked the keyboard end, then carved out the keyboard. The sides were narrow shorter pieces "glued" on with icing and carved. The entire piano was covered in black fondant and airbrushed in black to give it a shiny look. Gold details were handpainted. The inside of the piano (soundboard) was a foam core board covered with fondant; all of the details on the soundboard were made of gumpaste. I airbrushed the soundboard with edible gold and handpainted the rest of the details. I made the soundboard several days in advance to allow for drying time. I layed the soundboard inside the cake. The piano lid was also foamcore as it is light in weight and traveled the long distance well. I also airbrushed it in black. It is held up by a long dowel painted black. The bench and the decorative legs of the piano were made of wood, painted with edible black with gold details. The sheet music was actual music that was written by the honoree and reduced in size to fit the scale of the piano. This cake served 100.
