R2-D2 Cake

R2-D2 Cake on Cake Central

This R2-D2 cake was a joint effort on my grandson Trevor's part and mine. He wanted some kind of a Star Wars theme cake for his birthday, so this is our version. We used half of the ball cake pan set by Wilton for the head, and made it out of marble cake with chocolate butter cream, them covered with fondant. Gum paste for all of the details, and thinned down food paste for painting any details. The bottom cake was 4- 6" round cakes made with red velvet cake and filled with cooked butter cream filling, then frosted with butter cream and covered with fondant. The legs were rice Krispy treats covered in fondant. My husband cut out a stand stacking three 4" inch circles cut from pine, and then a 6" circle cut from 1/4" inch ply wood, then glued and stapled. We then covered the base with royal icing, then black fondant. My grandson is a stickler for detail, so he had a blast adding all of the touches to the cake. This was his first experience working with fondant, and I'm pretty much a novice. I think we both did an awesome job all things considering.
