Salvaged Disaster

I did this wedding cake for my cousin's daughter. I made the mistake of assembling the cake at home, trusting in the cake's dowling to hold it together. This cake was originally a four layer cake! We had to travel three hours to get to our destination and everything went well for the first 1 1/2 hours, then I noticed small cracks appearing...then big cracks...then chunks of cake started falling off the bottom layer. In order to save the top I grabbed it and moved it to the side. When we finally arrived I had 1 hour to totally remove all the draping and flowers from the original design and start over making new drapery to cover the cracks and thumbprints that were all over the cake! Luckily I had extra fondant and flowers along because there was a whole lot of patching to do. We were able to use the bottom layer by cutting the chunks up and serving it. ( I called it roadkill cake) Whew! I don't want to ever do that again. Lesson learned.
