I first pipe an outline ( onto waxed paper) with stiff royal icing then with just a few drops of water I thin the royal icing and tint it to the desired shade. Then fill your piping bag and fill in the design. I find a toothpick is helpful for spreading in tight areas. it's a blast to do!
