Echidna

Echidna on Cake Central

The short-beaked echidna is the native Australian "spiny ant-eater", and is a unique egg-laying mammal and monotreme. This life-sized cake depicting an echidna looking for termites on a log is made from a carved light fruit cake, and is covered with coloured fondants and 600 individually hand-rolled and coloured gumpaste quills. Inside the log are some hand-moulded termites, and surrounding it are GP eucalyptus leaves. This cake won 2nd prize for "Most Creative Cake" at the 2009 Sydney Royal Easter Show.
