Thank you, Rosie2! Brush embroidery: outline is done in small sections with royal icing, then a damp brush pulls the still-wet icing into the center making a translucent layer toward the center. Toba Garrett's book "The Well Decorated Cake" has great explanations, patterns, and photos of her designs.
