this is so pretty...i keep seeing the rolling pins and i'm tempted, but i can't figure out how to smooth the fondant onto the cake without "erasing" or smoothing down the design elements...any clues you would mind sharing?

You don't have to use to much "pressure" to make the fondant stick to your cake. The buttercream will be your "glue". I used to practice turning the smallest cake pan you have and cover it with the fondant (once you have used your rolling pin). You can practice too using the stirofoam cakes available in cake stores, covering them with buttercream and covering with the fondant. Don't be afraid, keep practicing and you will be surprised of the results!! Good luck. Let me know your results.
