this is my second dog cake, it seems to be the hit with the 8-9 yr olds - it was so worth the time and effort I put into it - I received the biggest hug from the little girl - she was just so happy!
start with 1/2 sheet cake, carve down sides and back 1.5 in, then carve head on an angle to a squared off nose, double up head with extra cake pieces, make sure to icing between layers, then carve down sides to make look like ears, use xtra pieces for tail also, the back is an 1/2 egg cake pan with wide end toward the butt of the dog, the hinds are ball cake pans cut on bottom only to give round top look - icing from bottom so hair looks right - keep a picture close by (raisinets for nose and malt ball eyes)
P.S - make sure to icing between bottom layer and egg cake pan layer and use plenty of icing to hold hind ball cake in place also......it does fine, to give a bit of "dog" look - use the Wilton black spray (from a distance and very quick and light).....when get to the top of the dogs hair don't forget to keep a line down the middle - just think of how hair on a dog lays....the tip I use is 21 for the hair, 71 for the tongue, 12 for the toes and 8 for the nails.... Have fun and good luck!
