Coffee With A Friend

Coffee With A Friend on Cake Central

My MIL wanted this cake to take to a dinner with her friends. The mugs are WASC covered in MMF and painted. The sugar bowl is a cupcake...covered in MMF and painted. The "coffee" is piping gel and the color wasn't cooperating so it looks more like cocoa than coffee! The spoons are MMf painted with luster dust. I tried to make the "table" look like it had a cloth on it, but didn't want to use MMF (MIL's request), so this is what I came up with. I'm a CRITIQUE GROUP MEMBER...all comments are appreciated. TFL.

Critique group member: Mush better than last time! I really like the designs you did on the sugar bowl and cups, I am not a fan of the "table cloth" though. The basket weave is not right and the border on the top cuts the cloth up so it looks like a basket. I don't know what I would have done in your place but I am sure someone else will have ideas.

Critique group member: I also think this one is better than the last, but both were great work. I actually like the basket weave- it looks different and I think it blends in quite nicely because you did add a border on the top. I don't think it looks like a basket at all :)

Critique group member: Your cups and sugar bowl look wonderful! I agree with the basketweave looking off, but the idea was great to me. Maybe if there was more color in the asketweave it would have broken it up a bit and made it a little more tablecloth like, otherwise great job.

critique subgroup member: I think this turned out great! I also like this one better than the last one. I like the spoons in the cup and sugar bowl, nice touch! I have to say the basketweave is just that "basket" weave, but also not sure what else could have been done. Maybe if you had taken the smooth icing over the edge and down the side 1/2 way and then done the ruffled border and at the top edge leave it rounded (like faux fondant) and borderless???? not sure if this would have worked?

Critique group member: I don't know...I think it sort of does look like a tablecloth. It does seem to be "hanging" there if that makes sense :? Tableclothes can have texture. I like it. I can see the improvements over the last cake, which is a wonderful thing :D

Critique Subgroup Member: I love that sugar bowl! Your basket weave is a little wobbly tho. This design is so much prettier. I have some tablecloth designs that are not fondant and I will look around for them and send you some pixs. I think you could have spent a little more attention to the coffee cup designs. But over all this is so much prettier.

critique subgroup member: this cake it so cute! i love that it's all cake! the design on the cup on the right makes it look a little like it's cracked. i thought the coffee was pudding. do the lines on the top of the sugar bowl not match the ones on the bowl itself?

Critique Group Member: My MIL doesn't like MMF either - LOL. Jescapades has a good eye. I didn't realize the stripe didn't match. That would be a good thing to remember when entering competitions.

oh oh oh I just thought of another idea for a tablecloth. Use the large icer tip to make ruffles. Well I just tried to search for a pic and couldn't find what I was looking for but I did come across a neat one bu "frulund2600" called ruffles and angels. It's something you could easily do with b/c. It looks like you'll probably be making more of these
