Lego Cake

Lego Cake on Cake Central

My first novelty cake using coloured rolled fondant. Lego Duplo Bob the Builder theme, for my son's 5th birthday. Now I know the individual cakes need cardboard support for the fondant, because when stacked, gravity took its toll on the upper bricks, where you can see some of the fondant slipping. He loved it anyway and even helped position some of the bricks. Embellished with his real Lego Bob the Builder toys!

what a CUTE idea! how big were the cakes? so clever, i bet it took awhile to cover and smooth each of them, you did good keeping such squared corners and tops. wonderful, WONDERFUL idea- i like this better than the larger version lego cakes.

Very cute, cute, cute! I am making my nephew a lego block cake in January! Do you mind sharing how to get the fondant so small? and what did you use for the top 4 pegs? Love the colors, too!

Thank you everyone! You are all so kind and enthusiastic. I baked the cake in a 14" square multi-size pan available from thebaker'scatalogue. So some cakes are 2" square, some were 2x4" and there was one 4x4". By the time I trimmed the little cakes to size, they were 1.5" square and about 1" high.

I divided the fondant intoabout 10 colours and covered each cake separately - yes, that took HOURS. The little pegs were made using a piping tube - size 10 or someth...

Oh and I reviewed lots of advice on this site about covering square cakes  The secret is to do the corners first, and it really helps. As mentioned, I didn't do it but I now know, you'll need a firm board or something trimmed to size under each cake, so the fondant can rest on it when you stack the blocks. I just placed a square of parchment under each cake so it wouldn't damage the blocks underneath but the parchment wasn't enough to support the fondant once I stacked the blocks.

And I only put pegs on about 2/3 of the blocks since I knew some would be hidden. Placed additional parchment under and between all blocks to stop the fondant sticking to each other. Makes serving less messy. So each kid chose his own colour.
