Gone Fishin'

Gone Fishin' on Cake Central

Had a blast making this cake once I finally decided on the concept. They said "bass fishing," so here's what I came up with. Pic doesn't show it well, but sitting next to the fisherman is a small fish, hooks, a lure, a tackle box and a beer. My first attempt at a fondant person -- I was thrilled with the outcome! 11x15x4 yellow w/ lemon curd. Fodant person, fondant covered rice kripy fish, gum paste sign, small fish, can, lure, hooks, gravel, and tackle box. Piping gel water. Vanilla wafer dirt.

I have to do a camping/fishing theme, your cake gave me some inspiration and I just wanted to comment that your cake is fabulous. I like everything about it, the fisherman model is great!

critique group member: the only thing I have to say about this cake is that the fish looks out of proportion. I am not sure if it's suppost to be like that? It may be since the face on the guy is kinda surprised. I think your rocks, grass, and dark water look good. I would've liked to see bigger lettering on the sign though...it is such a nice sign but it looks as if you got scared to write. Overall this is a very nice cake!

Critique Subgroup member: Your little guy turned out great as did the top of the composition. But when doing a whole "scene" I have issues with a scalloped border (although it is well done) and blank white sides. I think if you had carried the color down the sides it would really feel "complete". Then your writing is a bit small on the sign. And your fish is so out of porportion. Looks like Moby Dick and maybe the guys face should show surprise. But you need to know your composition is great!

critique group member: Your fisherman is well done and I like the rock area where he is sitting. The water looks cool and I like the cattails. I agree with Tiptop that I would like to see the scene extended on the sides of the cake.I also think the fish being caught is a bit too large. Overall, this si one great cake and I know a few fishermen who would just love it.

Critique subgroup member: another incredible cake! I agree with tiptop about adding some color to the sides. Other than that, I love it. The huge fish, to me, is a fabulous whimsical touch. And you are a natural if that's your first fondant figure. Awesome work

Critique subgroup member: Great fondant modeling! I really like the big fish! I think maybe the cattails are a little out of proportion? At first I wasn't sure what they were, but that could just be me! I love the gravel. your lure is very realistic! And I love the dark water!

critique group member: Wow!! This is great!! Love how you did the water. Only critique I have is the cake board, a little plain for such a great cake and as tiptop said, maybe incorporated the sides into the cake!!

critique subgroup member: Great job! everything is so realistic looking. I agree the bass is a little out of proportion as is the lure in the fish's mouth. Your borders are perfectly piped, with shells being evenly sized and spaced!

Critique group member: Too cool! I love the fish! Critique wise I think the side of the cake needs some interest it just looks plain maybe tit would have looked better if the sides were green so it looked like grass.
