Soot Sprite Cake Balls

Soot Sprite Cake Balls on Cake Central

These are cake balls covered in tinted milk chocolate with eyes made with candy melts. They're not black enough, nor are they fuzzy... but I'm still calling them "soot sprites"! I think there is a way to make them look more sooty, but I haven't quite got it worked out in a way that they will still taste nice. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

These are meant to be like the little creatures that live in the house in My Neighbor Totoro; they're something like dust bunnies. I actually started with a batch of black mixed with d. chocolate candy melts. My husband grimaced after tasting one, so I threw those out and started over. I wasn't sure if it was the black color or the candy melts that tasted bad.

So I ended up using purple candy color to tint some chocolate chips. My husband thinks it was the d. chocolate candy melts that tasted ick, so maybe I'll try again- using black color with chocolate chips.... Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words and ideas. I think oreo crumbs would be perfect- they would really have that sort of fuzzy/sooty look I was looking for
