Has anyone ever used baby food in their cake recipe? I found a recipe yesterday and I'm a little hesitant on using it. Thoughts?
I know of people using carrots in their carrot cake and swear by it. I don't know about other flavors.
I have used carrots and let me tell you...a 9X13 cake SERVES ONE...just grab a fork and a glass of milk, cuz you won't be able to stop...it is so YUMMY!!!!
I've used Banana baby food in banana cake. Great sub!
How do you use the carrots in the carrot cake? Does it replace the shredded carrots or add to them?
I have heard you can replace the oil with apple sauce or baby food. They even sold a product a few years ago (don't know if they still do) to do this that was essentially more expensive baby food in a squeeze bottle.
Wow! I have never heard this before! This is really fascinating! Has anyone ever tried the 3rd stage babyfood dessert Blueberry Buckle (It's blueberry with cinnamon and I think some rice or oat flour. It is so good! I used to buy one for myself whenever I bought it for my dds! LOL. Wonder what mix I could use that with and what to add. Wonder if it would turn an add color? Any ideas?
I have used the prunes in a prune cake, and the plums in a "plum nutty "cake. They were great!
I did a search for Carrot Cake and the recipe with the baby food was there. You might try searching for other flavors...let me tell you, it is GOOD STUFF!!!!
Well, I went ahead and made this cake. It was for a baby shower so I thought it would be appropriate. I used a combination of apricot and papaya baby food. It gave the cake just a hint of fruity taste. But the big difference I saw was in texture. This was THE most moist cakes I've ever tasted. I would definitely recommend it just for that.
My Mom used to make a Bundt cake with apricot baby food when I was a kid and it was out of this world good.

Here's the recipe I used. I decreased the oil to 3/4 C and didn't add the nuts. And used apricot and papaya baby food.
INGREDIENTS
1 (18.25 ounce) package moist yellow cake mix
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 (4 ounce) jar apricot baby food
1 (4 ounce) jar plum baby food
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9 or 10 inch Bundt pan.
Combine the cake mix, sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, apricot baby food and plum baby food. Mix for 2 minutes. Stir in walnuts and pour batter into the prepared pan.
Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 1 hour. Wonderful with a light dusting of confectioner's sugar or with an almond frosting.
Wow - those tiny jars make that much of a difference in a big cake? I'd think you'd need 5 to amount to anything!
Well, I made a 12" x 18" cake and used 6 jars for each layer. I'm not that fond of yellow cake (i prefer white) and I thought it made a huge difference.
Thanks for the recipe jozie2000. I prefer white over yellow too. I am dying to try the Bluberry Buckle babyfood in a recipe. It is 3rd stage babyfood in the larger jar. I wonder what mix I could use it in...spice cake maybe...? The Blueberry Buckle babyfood has cinnamon and I think maybe oatflour as a thickener. It is so yummy! But I wonder if it would turn the cake a weird color since it is dark blue? What do you think?
mmm that sounds yummy!!! might even be good in a white cake?!? maybe a couple jars? and who cares if it's a light blue color! that might be neat!!! might call for a test run! lol
Whoa - 6 jars per layer - that could get pricey! Those jars are close to a dollar each for the big ones...
Ohhh....I'm really excited...I was at the store today looking at baby food. I found a flavor I've never seen before, must be kind of new (my youngest is 19 months). Carrot Apple Mango!!! I got three jars is that enough for a cake??? I remembered Candy120 saying that carrot was good. Can't wait to make carrot cake with that! Also got some walnuts and raisins and cream cheese for the icing. I have a project that I'm working on first for someone else right now...will have to wait awhile for my carrot cake.
I tried the baby food carrot cake from this site this past week. I did a few modifications and it came out stellar!!
I added spices:
cinnamon, all spice, and nutmeg
also added walnuts and shredded carrots.
Very yummy indeed!!
This is spectacular...I have a baby at home and we still have a bunch of baby food in the pantry. I'm going to dig in there and see what looks good...do you have any reccomendations for a yellow cake??
