I've never made buttercream frosting before or tried it either. Well, sorry to say my kids don't like it. They said it's too oily, slimy, slippery for them. Maybe they're used to the regular store bought frosting..
These test cupcakes/frosting are supposed to be for their school Halloween party. Do you think other kids will feel the same way?

No, the kids will love them.....I have four children and they can't all decide on one thing together! LOL.....One loves the orginal Wilton BC recipe, two of them like the butter and crisco BC and the last one likes the whipped icing......go figure.......if you're taking cupcakes to a whole class, the majority will love them!!

What recipe did you use? I've never heard buttercream described as oily, slimmy or slippery. I take cupcakes to school all them time and the majority of kids do like the frosting but not all. Some eat the whole cupcake, some eat just the frosting, and som eat just the cake part. I think you should be fine taking cupcakes....just remember kids are finicky and if they don't like something you made don't take it personally...you can't please em all! LOL!!

It was a BC recipe from CC that called half Crisco and half butter. I guess what she meant was the consistency was REALLY smooth which is probably from the crisco/butter.

I agree with Berta, no matter if your using a 1/2 and 1/2 recipe or not, it shouldn't be oily slimy or slippery! The ratio of butter to shortening is not the only thing, how much liquid and ps are you using? That also makes a big difference.
I tend to get a greasier BC when I use butter, but I think that's just from being in TX and the weather, that's why a majority of time I use an all crisco recipe.
With kids, you will NEVER please everyone! So just make them cute and usually kids don't care. They will eat what they want and be happy! icon_biggrin.gif
