I have only used Luster Dust - see my cake photos for the Stars cake and the Football Kickoff cake.

For both of them, I mixed the luster dust with vanilla schnapps. Others told me to use clear alcohol, and that's all I had in the house, and it worked just fine. Mix your colors in with just a drop or two of alcohol at a time. You can always add more, but it's a mess if you add too much. I mixed mine in the little tiny solo cups (2 oz??) then covered them tightly to keep them from dyring out.

Once you've got the consistency you're after (you'll know, because it will just feel right), use a decorator brush to paint it on gently. I use crusting buttercream, and I've found the best way to do it is just get that buttercream base as smooth as you can, let it dry, then paint gently over it as many times as it takes to get the colors in the intensity you need them.

The alcohol evaporates and it dries to a beautiful luster. Good luck!
