I've made a few cakes in my time... but this one was a doozy..
nothing was going right after I put the fondant on my cakes.. I let them dry before decorating and stacking and the fondant cracked everywhere! All along the bottom of the cakes and spread up the sides.
I spent days on this cake and I'm sick to my stomach. It's for my nanas 50th wedding anniversary and there is going to be 200 people there. I'm so embarrassed to even show my face
what can I do to fix this? It is just so tacky and sloppy
Take off the fondant and ice the cake in buttercream. If you can't do smooth icing well yet, ice with the rustic technique where you hold the spatula at the bottom of the cake, then as you turn the turntable keep moving up until you are at the top. Add some flowers and your topper....it will be nice! Here's a pix of the technique....
Sound like your fondant might be a bit too thick and your cake have squashed a littl and put pressure on the sides of the cake...while fondant is flexible when working, once it dries it's fragile. Make sure your dowels are just a bit above the top of the cake so the next tier doesn't put any pressure on the one below it.
Jeff is right......nix the fondant (which isn't workiing for you) & ice as he described. I promise it will look good and your nerves will settle down.
Some cakes just go that way...and I think we have all had it happen. Go with Jeff's solution of the buttercream and have fun with it.
Here are a few easy ones with buttercream which should be fun to do. You just need to make more buttercream and just have some fun with it. You can do it!!! Hang in there. I am sure it will be fine!!
