What does everyone use for a dowel cutter? I usually use plastic dowels, very rarely use wooden dowels.
Thanks!
I have a small miter box and saw that I use for cutting wooden dowels. Actually, my husband cuts them for me. That is his contribution (and carrying the heavy, finished cakes) to my hobby.
I sure wish I could remember what that tool I used was called :( Maybe a small pipe cutter?
Like Jeff, I use pruning shears. You could invest in a PVC pipe cutter for the plastic dowels, though.
I use pruning shears for chopsticks, but I have central dowels that go up to 1/2" in diameter and I can't cut them with the shears.
Really…I cut ½ inch dowels with mine all the time! That’s what I use for the central dowel that I mount in my base board then slide my tiers down over to build a cake.
Your hands are probably a lot stronger than mine, @Jeff_Arnett . They are old and arthritic :o)
That is exactly what I do, secure the dowel in the base board and slide down the tiers.
Actually, my cutters ratchet and they can easily cut up to 1 inch thicknesses. I bought them at Lowe's years ago and they are still cutting!
Same here. I think they are Fiskars, but not sure, for anybody wondering. Make sure if you are buying, get the ratchet kind. Makes cutting so much easier!
I use a flexible tube cutter from Home Depot.
