Hello

I have been doing cake on n off for few years now , as a hobbiest , never worked anywhere , taking orders from home and 2 time winner in cake decorating competition. Very recently won 1st placein Ny cake show 2017 in beginners category.

Now i want to work in a professional setup , wedding cake boutique , what compensation should i ask for ? When i look at job sites thay offer hardly $10 to $ 12 hourly. Is this is what offered at initial level ?

Most places offer minimum wage for your area - at least to start.  Sometimes you have to work as long as 3 yrs before getting a raise!  I would say what you seem to have found is about right.

Thanks for your input.

I want to do this part time, so even less money

I worked in a local bakery part time and started at $8.50 an hour. After 6 months was supposed to be evaluated for a raise, and then again at a year (I quit after hours were cut during slow summer season). Their main decorator only made $10/hr after being there for two years. We've got a place hiring currently at $12-17/hr (which is the highest I've seen), but it is a full time position  and it required 4 years of previous bakery employment experience.

Try not to get discouraged and best of luck!

I  am also considering to work part time only . May i know what was your part time hours?

Did you had any back ground or formal education in pastry, there are so many openings they require pastry experience .

Did they gave you any training ? I have never worked before , Sometimes i get so nervous , i ask myself "Can i really do this?"
