Red Royal Icing Changed To Brown Drying

What in the world? I made red (pretty too!) icing for mickey mouse cookies. I went to bed and they were red, this morning they are burgundy..brown. Help. What have I done? I am re making cookies, but I need a sure shot to not have a pink (or brown)
Red is just one of THOSE colors lol I always add a tbsp of cocoa powder to my icing to make it brown, then add red and it turns out perfect. You could try adding a little more red. If the brown is too dark, add some white icing to it to lighten it back up, then a few drops of red. What brand of color did you use?
I just had the same problem this week. My deep pink turned to a dark burgundy color...not at all how they looked when I flooded the cookies. From what I've read, you need to make the royal icing a lot lighter and let it sit for a while (maybe overnight) because the color deepens with time. I learned the hard way. Good luck!
I was using an off brand gel. (other colors have been vivid and beautiful!) Do not recall where or why I would have bought this brand.
I am at the point of putting a slightly pink red on my cookies. I am afraid to add the brown at this late point in the game. This next batch has to be able to be used... even if they are not perfect.
Thank you all for your help. Next time I will start earlier and try the touch of brown.
