I'm trying to make jewels out of fondant for a cake. I've heard you're supposed to paint them with dust mixed with vodka once they're on the cake. But can I paint them first and then put them on the cake after?

You absolutely can just be aware that wherever you pick them up you will probably have to touch up

Yes & if you do it far enough in advance they will dry enough for you to handle them.  Otherwise you will have to touch up.  I think it's better to do it before so  you don't have to be as careful about the cake while painting the jewels.
