I am making a cake for a friend of mine's wife. They are Jamaican and he asked me what flavor cake I could make for them. I asked him to give me ideas. Well, we came up with kaluha flavored cake with banana cream flavored icing. I am very leary of the Lorann flavors, cause some of them have tasted bitter or too strong to me.
I know that traditional Jamaican cake is the Rum cake, however, I really don't want to attempt that, because I don't have a recipe and he didn't suggest it.
My question is, Do any of you have some suggestions/ideas that I could use for his wife's cake? I am only charging him $30..so I don't want this to get too expensive. I have some Blue Mountain coffee that he brought us back from one of his trips....I was wondering if I could incorporate that with the kaluha or would that be too much or too strong? Also, He is wanting this decorated, so whatever I do, I will need to be able to decorate the cake. I am doing a Badminton theme, since his wife is a badminton competitor.
ANY suggestions on the flavor of cake/icing would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thank you so much!
You can use the Kahluah flavored coffee creamer in a chocolate cake , or you might consider making a pina colada cake with banana frosting...... after all, Pina Colada's started in the caribbean.
Thank you so much for the suggestion!
I tried to find kaluha flavored coffee creamer today, with no luck. Do you know what brand it is? I will continue to look. But here is what i tried today...
I made a white cake with white chocolate pudding mix and substituted 1/2 cup of the water with 1/2 cup Rum cream that our Jamaican friends gave us. I haven't tasted it yet, but I am going to send some of it to work with my hubby because the Jamaican husband, works with him. I just wish I had made my icing banana flavored. I am in a class, so I am using this opportunity to make the flavors right. But I forgot to get the dern banana flavoring today. Oh well. We'll see how the rum cream cake turns out.
Thank you again for your suggestion! I really want to try it but can't seem to find the coffee creamer...the only exotic one they had was hazelnut. (that would be yummy too!)
kaluha flavored cake with banana cream flavored icing just doesn't sound right to me. I love Kaluha cake but not with banana cream. Does she like chocolate? Being from the Caribbean myself anything with any type of Liquor would be fine. That's if she likes kaluha. I personally love Kaluha. Why not butter cream or chocolate butter cream. I am just not feeling Kaluha and bananas. Just my 2 cents. I hope you don't mind.
coffee-flavour (kaluha) goes well with chocolate (making mocha). i don't see banana and coffee working together, so if someone wanted a kaluha cake, i would probably do ganache filling flavoured with kaluha, and mocha buttercream made with cocoa and a little instant coffee dissolved in cream, or a bit of liquid espresso. i would then do the badminton decoration (3D would be good) on a board the same size of the cake, covered on both sides with adhesive vinyl, so that the whole decoration could be lifted off and placed on the table to be enjoyed while the cake is being served.
