making my first tapered cake to feed 20 people. i baked a 6, 8, 10. 1 layer each. should i do 2 layers and will it feed 20 people?  when tapering, taper while cake are cold or room temp?

I think what you have should just make the 20 servings.   Doubling the layers will double your serving #s - putting you way over the amount you need.   I suggest cutting the cake - fully stacked - while it is cold but not fzn.

OMG i did it last night and crumb coated. now the fear is flipping it upside down, fear of crumbling.

Well you're off to a great start.  You say you wish to flip it so the smallest layer is on the bottom?  That should not be a problem - especially if the cake is cold.
