I want to make make a buttercream cake with a rkt bowling ball on top. The plan was to coat the ball in buttercream and cover with a mirror glaze and attach it to the top of the cake with a dowel driven into the cake board. However, unlike fondant, you can't handle mirror glaze... Can anyone advise on how to place the ball on the top of the cake without smudging the ball finish? Is it possible?

I guess you dowel the ball before you glacé it?  Maybe if you use plies to grab the ball very high up and then push it in the cake? But I've never done that with a glaced ball...only with delicate gum paste pieces...
